Thick Pick: Record Store Day Quote from Jeff

Viva La Vinyl!

It’s Record Store Day!  A day to celebrate the independent store.   A lifelong record buying obsessive, I will be visiting my favorite local, Mod Lang in El Cerrito, CA.  Specializing in UK imports and alternative music, Paul and Naomi were one of the first places to carry my old Pearl Jam fanzine, Footsteps, and are true supporters of my music buying habits.  They go the extra mile in finding imports, ephemera and are just the best.

Jeff Ament said a few words to the Oregonian about the importance of supporting independent record stores:

”I grew up in north-central Montana where I had three choices that were 35 miles away — Woolworth’s, Kmart and Ricky’s Records,” the bassist says. “I always went to Ricky’s first, because he was a full-on rocker with a major opinion about what I should buy. If I went in looking for a Grand Funk record, I would often leave with Black Sabbath or the Stooges. Then he went out of business, and I was back to Kmart and Columbia House.”

Lots of record stores will have special Record Store Day release exclusives – musicians like Jane’s Addiction, Depeche Mode, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan have provided limited edition items that may be in your local…get out and shop!
