Every single guitar in the pictures of Mike and Stoney below was made possible by Mr. Les Paul, who died today in New York at the age of 94. Stone and Mike have so many Gibson Les Pauls in their collection — I think Stone’s gold 1969 one with the 3 on the headstock was with him back in Mother Love Bone days too — I won’t even get into listing them all here. But the man behind the guitar wasn’t merely the man who designed the classic Gibson, he pretty much invented solid-body electric guitars, an innovation that practically made rock and roll as we know it possible. Paul was also an accomplished musician with eleven No. 1 hits, and he played two gigs a week in Manhattan until last year. But he will most remembered for his instruments, which are played everywhere by almost every single famous guitarist.
