As a long, long time collector of UK music magazine Q, I can tell you I appreciate the publications music-geek style reporting…and they often have pictures rarely seen elsewhere. That said, I’m out of my tree with glee that the September 2009 issue of Q has a Pearl Jam feature called “Last Men Standing” that is sure to be a must for any PJ Collector. I get mine from my local record shop, but it’s also at Borders and Barnes & Noble in the U.S.
The writer met with the band at the warehouse, and spoke to them May 19th of this year on their “turf”. The photos are stunning – seeing the lads in their environment is sublime. Photo highlights: mini portrait surfboards, boxes of capos, harmonicas, picks, shakers, monkeys and a photo of Andy Wood. Not to mention an Elton John pinball machine! We’ll all doubtless be dissecting every label on every box on every shelf for a long time to come. (Should I have just typed that? They’ll never allow photos of the place again!) And not to be too much of a PJ trivia geek -wait, what am I saying? – but at least to clarify, I think the writer misheard…I believe Stone’s dog is named Basie (as in Count Basie), not Bessie. Anyone?
And further, the writer mistakenly calls the fan-run Wishlist Foundation the band’s charitable organization; Pearl Jam’s charitible foundation is the Vitalogy Foundation. Still – a fab article.
Quote from Ed, regarding the depths of his voice: “Well, I do my best to channel but I smoke like a chimney and drink like I’ve got a faucet over my head. It’s like Yeah, I can do this thing, but watch this! I’ll make it even harder and still do it.” And he shows the interviewer picture of his girls Olivia and Harper, which the writer describes in detail. ARGH!
Until you get your very own copy, here are scans of the entire feature-with great thanks to Randall from the Bugs Mailing List, via Dennis. Go buy a copy though to have one for the archives. You know you want to.
UPDATE: In my haste to post this great thing, I didn’t make it clear that yes, this is the entire article and the missing text from the bottom of the last page of the article (our scan is bent) reads:
“He said, Each of our records is a racehorse that we’ve trained and groomed. When we enter it into a race we want it to win. And I said, Our records are horses, too, and we also train and groom them. The difference is,” Vedder concludes, a beautific smile on his face, “I want ours to run free in a field”.

WOW!!! Thanks for the tip Kathy!!!
Can it be bought in the US?
Thanks for posting this
Some notes: I’d never scanned anything in my life before this article today. The sewn on badge on Ed’s shirt is Felix the Cat (remember him? Some of us of a certain ag do!).
Oh, and I didn’t realize the bottom of page 4 was bent. The last paragraph of the article reads: “He said, Each of our records is a racehorse that we’ve trainded and groomed. When we enter it into a race we want it to win. And I said, Our records are horses, too, and we also train and groom them. The difference is,” Vedder concludes, a beautific smile on his face, “I want our to run free in a field”.
Was there also a page missing…..thanks so much for scanning this it was clear to read.. I read the first page then the next page didnt seem to finish off where the first one ended..
Was the the August ed of Q???
Cheers….and thanks again
Sorry I missed that page didnt realise u had to click on each page…duh me!…:)
Some kids on one of the boards are concerned that Kathy’s wording “here are scans of four pages” implies that the article is more than 4 pages long. It is not. What Kathy has here is the complete article. Just wanted to clarify that for y’all!
Just so folks in the U.S. know, if you want to find Q in Barnes & Noble, the morons have it in the section marked “Men’s Interest.” Gee, that women’s movement was fun while it lasted, wasn’t it? Also, if it’s just out in the UK, we are always a month behind in the US, so we may not see the September issue of Q until September.
What a gorgeous shot, thanks Kathy!
Have to say I simply love this quote, “I like people, just not when I have to be around them.” (E.V.)
Eddie admits that he’s a drunk. Nice, real nice.
So its the September edition of “Q” the article is in?
Thanks for clarifying Randall! I was so concerned with getting this beauty posted that I didn’t get a chance to ask if it was complete for sure…esp. with the bent page. You’re a gem!! I will edit the post to read.
…edit the post to read appropiately.
“From 1994, they were kept from touring for three years…” ?? Nice to see these guys checked their facts.
