Strings & Veterans At Austin City Limits Taping

by Kathy Davis on September 30, 2009

After Pearl Jam’s 2 of four shows in L.A., they are off to Austin for their appearance at the Festival and taping of the PBS broadcast for the 35th season of Austin City Limits.  Two news articles shed a little light on what will go on for the broadcast.

The building in which the show is taped is a small studio run by PBS Station KLRU, located on the University of Texas Campus, Communications building 6th Floor. It’s a wee little room and only holds 270 people.  We’ve learned from this blogpost at that some of the audience may likely be comprised of local recovering military personnel wounded in the line of duty. Repost from the blog:

The passes that would normally have gone to the public or the fan club are going to members of the Wounded Warriors at the band’s request.

UPDATE: Pearl Jam is working with the Warrior and Family Support Center in San Antonio not the Wounded Warriors organization mentioned on this blog earlier.

More on the Warrior and Family Support Center here.

Another blog post  mentions that Texas musicians Will Taylor and Strings Attached have been asked to perform with Pearl Jam at the taping:

It’s the toughest ticket in town, but Will Taylor found a way to get into Pearl Jam’s ACL Taping Saturday at 8 p.m. Taylor and Strings Attached have been tapped by Eddie Vedder and company to back the band on two songs.

Hmmm…could “The End” and “Just Breathe” performances be in the works for ACL? Intriguing.  Here’s some info about Strings Attached from their website:

Beginning in 1999, Will Taylor implemented a new idea after brainstorming with other local Austin musicians. Taylor began collaborating with both local and nationally renowned artists, rearranging their known material, brought in his own crew of seasoned jazz and contemporary roots musicians to play, and moved the performance venue from the traditional smokey club scene to the beautiful interior and excellent acoustics of a church sanctuary. Since then Will Taylor and Strings Attached have presented over 50 concert collaborations to over 12000 audience members, countless more through four KGSR Live Radio broadcasts, and many appearances on KUT, KLBJ, KMFA and KOOP Radio. The the last few years they’ve expanded the repertoire to include Album/Band tribute shows where again the music is re-arranged and reinterpreted by Will and the ensemble. In 2006, over 1600 Beatles fans saw them re-create the entire White album. They’ve also presented the music of Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel and Jimi Hendrix.

Rock, Free World style.
