Prior to the second encore, Ed came back on stage with a smoke and something behind his back, indicating he wanted to show the crowd some of his early Christmas presents. “One of the most random gifts I’ve ever received was tonight. Fan Club Single #1: Band’s First Christmas
Any ordinary Joe can go to a record store or go online and buy one of Pearl Jam’s albums. But if your fandom goes a little deeper, you have probably joined the Ten Club and discovered the joy that is Pearl Jam’s tradition of sending fan-club-only vinyl with unreleased material around holiday time. PJ’s first Fan Club single delivers a tender yet somber Christmas reflection on Side A, “Let Me Sleep (Christmas Time)”, and a genuinely heartfelt audio letter to their fans on Side B, “Ramblings”.

By the time Pearl Jam turned two at the end of 1992, turntables were well on their way to being only the domain of audiophiles, DJs, and old-schoolers and band fan clubs were mostly nostalgia. But the young band had other ideas. They’d sent their fan club the same holiday gift in 1991 that the Beatles had back in the day: an exclusive 45rpm single with their greetings on the b-side. 1992 would be no different.

Christmas, 1993: Pearl Jam’s “Ten” was already an instant classic, Lollapalooza had earned them legions of fans, and “Vs.” sold like 839 billion copies in its first week of release. One definition of “Ramblings” as an adjective is “straying from one subject to another; desultory”. While I don’t know what the word “desultory” means, the “Ramblings” B-sides on Pearl Jam’s first three Christmas singles surely live up to their name.
