Notes: From the start, Ed addresses the high amount of security yet there are floor seats in place: “Good evening, hey you guys … hey hey, look, … everybody’s wearing blue (security). OK guys get ready, the pit’s gonna get started any minute. (sarcasm) We’re just gonna play something slow so everybody’s who’s outside still drinking beer won’t miss too much.” leading to “Release”.

September 5, 1992: Fort Bend County Fairgrounds, Houston, TX

set: Oceans, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Even Flow, Alive, Porch, Rockin’ in the Free World
Notes: Setlist may be incomplete. The band starts a few bars (full band) of Soundgarden’s “Jesus Christ Pose” (instrumental) after “Oceans”. “We made it! We will make it! Now that we’re here, Why go home?”. Ed talked to the crowd, saying “I’ve been thinking about you guys a lot. Ever since that fuckin’ Republican Convention, I’m really worried about y’all” During “Even Flow”, fans in the pit fall down and Ed stops the band to help out, “I’m sorry you’ll just have to wait there’s people (down) … and people are more important than music any fuckin’ day”, right back into the second chorus of “Even Flow” without barely missing a beat. September 11, 1992: Irvine Meadows, Irvine, CA

set: Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Sonic Reducer, Even Flow, Improv (Hard to Imagine riffs), Alive, Porch/(So What)/(Tearing)
Notes: The finale of the Lollapalooza tour is a three-night stand at Irvine Meadows in Irvine, CA. Ed is in a good mode and addresses the crowd playfully: “All right, this is it … this is fuckin’ it. We’ve been doing this shit for two months. These are some of the greatest friends that I’ll have and this is it, this is the end of this shit. Let’s just fuckin’ rock out!” and the band launches into “Why Go”. Before “Deep” Ed mentions “Sure is good to be in front of real people, my voice is kinda hurting and the reason why I mention it and the reason why I’m really mad about it is we’ve been doing TV shows (MTV Video Music Awards and “Singles” premier party) and all that kinda shit and I could give a fuck for all of them. (crowd cheers) I couldn’t wait to get back – I don’t think any of us could – and play for real people, I hope (you’re) real people.” During the breakdown in “Deep”, Ed sings an improv “I wanna live in the pit / I wanna live in the pit / I wanna die in the pit / You don’t need to bury me, let me trample in my own ecstasy, my own ecstasy”. During “Deep”, Ed sings the 2nd verse instead of the bridge by mistake, but it fits right in and they end with the final chorus. Before “Sonic Reducer”, Ed says “You probably didn’t know this, but Nirvana wanted to play a different song instead of what they had to play on the MTV awards (they played ‘Lithium’), they wanted to play two new songs even, which I think would be the greatest thing that any Nirvana fan or music fan would have liked to hear, and we wanted to play something different too. We wanted to play a song called ‘Sonic Reducer’ instead of ‘Jeremy’. It’s an an old punk song by the Dead Boys. The reason we wanted to play is I think ‘Jeremy’ would have liked that song. This is it …” Commenting on the seats in the pit, Ed says “By doing whatever we want up here, we’re trying to make up for the fact that it doesn’t look like you can do anything out there. Don’t worry, I’ll try to arrange it for tomorrow (that) we won’t have security, I’ll take care of it. (slowly an jokingly to security) I’m just kidding.” Ed improvs during “Even Flow”: “I’ve tried so hard to be someone / You don’t all get chances to be anyone / You all get chances, but only one”. The band jams over “Hard to Imagine” riffs and Ed sings “What can you do, after a certain point / nothing seems to matter / What can you do / someone told me, someone told me yesterday / ‘Today is once in a lifetime’ / Somebody told me, whispered in my ear / They held my hand / So I had to be here / They said ‘Today, today, today is once in a lifetime’.” Before “Porch”, Ed talks to the Irvine crowd “This is one of my favorite t-shirts. Last time I wore it was on Mother’s Day in San Diego at Iguana’s or in Tijuana. And then of course the back says ‘No Bush 92′. This is the coolest thing, I have a think about favorite shirts, this is my Sweathogs t-shirt from 7th grade. If I jump in the crowd, don’t tear it off, ok?” “Porch” includes tags by Ministry (“So What”) and Rollins Band (“Tearing”)

Many of you know me as a co-founder of TwoFeetThick.com with Jessica Letkemann and Kathy Davis. I’ve been a fan of Pearl Jam for over 20 years, and together with co-founder (and PJ fan) Martin Wulffeld we’ve launched a Pearl Jam-related project that I’m very excited about and can’t wait to tell you about here.

Our project is Setlisting.com - Setlists and Statistics for your favorite artists. If you’ve enjoyed the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology, think of Setlisting as a Concert Chronology with no bounds – setlists for all artists, not just Pearl Jam.

With Setlisting, you can easily add a setlist for a concert you attend (or have attended) and say “I WENT!” thus keeping track of your personal concert history. We’re working hard on adding a ton of interesting and fun statistics for artists, songs, concerts and especially for your personal concert history. If you have any suggestions in that area feel free to give us feedback.

We launched on August 1, 2012 with ZERO setlists! We’ve planted a seed and we’re watching the number of setlists grow.

For you – the Pearl Jam fan – we’ve personally entered hundreds and hundreds of Pearl Jam concerts, with help from many of my supportive friends. All of Pearl Jam’s known concerts are in Setlisting, but many don’t have setlists. Try updating some! We’ve made it very easy to update setlists.

I fell in love with the Concert Chronology the first time I saw it in 1996. I was honored to assume management of it on TwoFeetThick.com in 2005. It was around this time that I had the idea for a “Concert Chronology beyond just Pearl Jam”. Many years later, I was finally able to build the site and launch with the help of my partner and fellow PJ fan Martin Moen Wulffeld, who built the cool AllOrNone.org fan site.

We love our history, and it continually amazes us that we can get updates – and great updates! – to Pearl Jam concerts from more than 20 years ago. Aside from the 2012 shows, we haven’t had Concert Chronology updates for older shows in a long time. In the past few months, though, we’ve started from the beginning and have been fact-checking some things and found some changes, listed below.

20 years, 4 months, 16 days – that’s how long it took to discover the setlist for a long-lost show at small club before Pearl Jam’s first record was even released. This summer show in July was the second-to-last show on a quick summer jaunt across the U.S. in 1991.

The setlist below comes from “Billy” who hinted that he had information about this show, then contacted Jeff Blagg who wrote the amazing PJ Stat Tracker App, who forwarded these goodies to us.

He wrote:

I asked Eddie for it when they were done.  He took a polaroid of me, shook my hand and said “Thanks for coming”.  There were about 20 people watching them.   The only thing I had heard about them before the show was the three-song promotional CD single for “Alive” and the Mother Love Bone connection. This was the show when they opened for Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and Soul Asylum (!!!)

At Pearl Jam’s current tour of South America, we find out the setlist often just minutes after the last notes have been played and the band takes their final bow. But for those pre-internet shows of the past, we depend on fans with good memories or stashed away memorabilia to help add to the information in our fan-contributed Concert Chronology.

TFT Notes: Ed greets the crowd on the second day of the benefit, “Good evening. Thanks for the reception. It’s beautiful out there, it’s a beautiful day … that’s two in a row. Ya know, last night I started with a Neil song, a Neil Young song, and it only took me about 30 seconds to screw it all up. I’m not gonna do that again tonight. I went in the back and told Neil “I can’t believe … that was a big mistake.” and he said “No, the only mistake you made was not telling me you were gonna play it because I woulda went out and played it with ya. We coulda fucked it up together (laughter)”. I didn’t mean to cuss in front of the kids, sorry about that. Neil and Pegi, they don’t use the F-word.” “Elderly Woman…” starts and gets a big “Hello!”. “Thank You. I was thinking about htis i couldn’t sleep last night thinking about the weight and the intensity of neil and pegi and all of the people involved to do this 25 years consecutively it’s such an amazing feat. And coming over coming here maybe 10 times in the last however many years to get to know some of thesee kids and to see the work that’s been done, these Young men and young women and their parents i just can’t tell them what a huge impact they’ve had on my life.” Before another crowd-pleaser, “Last Kiss”, Ed talks about Maricor, “And my one friend Maricor, that’s her right there (points, to applause) Last night I was saying she was two college degress more than I do which isn’t saying much. But she’s probably got two more than all of y’all! And this one I think is her favorite, so this is for Maricor. If you want to sing, sing it for maricor.” Ed references the Occupy Wall Street Movement with “I’m going to play one for the 99%-ers. I feel like that’s a movement that you can fully back, because you’re either one of the 99% or you’re one of the 1%, and if you’re one of the 1%, you’ve got it pretty fucking good. You have to learn to play well with others, pass the ball to other people and give them a shot. (“I Am A Patriot”) is written by a guy called Little Steven Van Zandt”. Today, Eddie was “walking with his boyfriend” and “sure as hell ain’t no Republican either.” For “Society”, Ed mentions “I have a few friends that are gonna help me here. The first one I’d like to introduce … he’s a local (San Francisco). He’s an extermly talented musician and songrwiter, please welcome, Mr. Jerry Hannan. I met Jerry through a friend called Sean Penn we worked on something called Into The Wild. There’s a song – probably the best song on there, it’s called “Society” – it’s Jerry who wrote it so we’re gonna do that.” “Alright this is exciting for me I get to invite Regine from Arcade Fire to join me and the ukulele”, which leads to another collaboration on “Tonight You Belong To Me”. “Not only is it great to call this guy a friend, but it’s great to be able to play with him, Beck Hansen”, leading to a well-received version of “Sleepless Nights”. “Alright, this is Uncle Neil” who helps Ed make up for the previous night’s miscue with terrific harmonies and harmonica on “Don’t Cry No Tears”.

TFT Notes: Sporting a wide-brimmed hat and a Bridge Schoool t-shirt, Eddie performed at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit for the second time as a solo artist (read about his 2004 appearance). Smiling and energetic, Ed starts “Good evening, thank you. I was thinking to start with a Neil Young song. He’s got a lot of them, he can’t possibly use them all tonight, so I thought I’d make use of this one.” He debuts Neil Young’s “Don’t Cry No Tears” but unfortunately stops during the first verse, joking “Alright I might have to play that one later. ” Donning the harmonica, Ed plays a rousing “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” with the crowd taking a few lines of the chorus. “Don’t Cry No Tears” is revisited with hesitation “I’m gonna try this one one more time (crowd cheers, big smile)  just relax”. “Don’t Cry No Tears” is the lead track from Neil Young’s 1975 album, Zuma. “Here’s a little Mandolin for you” leading to “Rise”. “Neil and Pegi asked if I was gonna bring my ukulele so here it is. And this is – well, it’s kind of an unexpurgated love song written for my wife – I’m sure she wouldn’t mind if I dedicated it to Maricor, my friend back here tonight. Maricor has two more college degrees than I have, from (University of California at) Berkeley. She’s my hero, (then looking back at all the students) or one of ‘em.” Régine from Arcade Fire “graciously accepted the invitation to try this next one with me”, to which they duet on “Tonight You Belong To Me”. Pearl Jam standards “Just Breathe” and “Porch” bring the crowd to their feet. Beck joins Eddie for the last track of his set, “Here’s my friend for the last one, here’s Beck. This is one we did years and years ago, it’s nice to do it again”. Beck and Eddie last performed “Sleepless Nights” at the Concert for Artists’ Rights at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles in February 2002. “Thank you Bridge School, thank you Beck, good night” in closing to an appreciative crowd.
