TFT Notes: Pearl Jam played the first shows of 2011 as part of “Pearl Jam Destination Weekend”, a celebration as part of Pearl Jam’s 20th anniversary. The 2-day weekend event featured main stage acts as well as 8 artists on 2 other side-stages. The second stage saw a few collaborations. Mike McCready joined Star Anna on “Alone in this Together” and “Wolves in Disguise”. Mike, Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron joined Joseph Arthur for Jeff’s “When the Fire Comes” (CD for this song was part of Ten Club ticket goodie bag). Ed joined The Strokes on “Juicebox”. Glen Hansard, Liam Finn, Joseph Arthur and Dan Peters (snare) joined Pearl Jam for “Who You Are”. “Setting Forth”, from Eddie Vedder’s solo Into The Wild was played full band. “Not For You” featured The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas. Binaural outtake and Lost Dog “In The Moonlight” makes its debut, with QotSA’s Josh Homme sharing vocals. Liam Finn joins Ed for “Education”, and TheNewNo2′s Dhani Harrison plays guitar on an inspired “State of Love and Trust”. Chris Cornell swaps places with Eddie and Mother Love Bone’s classic “Stardog Champion” is performed full band. Temple of the Dog reunion is then in full swing, with “Say Hello 2 Heaven”, “Reach Down” (backup singers: Glen Hansard, Joseph Arthur, Liam Finn, Eddie Vedder) and “Hunger Strike”. Kick Out The Jams” closes the show with Mudhoney’s Steve Turner on guitar and Mark Arm on vocals.

TFT Notes: Pearl Jam played the second night of “Pearl Jam Destination Weekend”, a celebration as part of Pearl Jam’s 20th anniversary. The 2-day weekend event featured main stage acts as well as 8 artists on 2 other side-stages. The second stage saw many collaborations, today. Mike McCready joined Star Anna on “Alone in this Together” and “Wolves in Disguise”. Mike, Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron joined Joseph Arthur for Jeff’s “When the Fire Comes” and Arthur’s “In The Sun”. Ed showed up with Liam Finn for an alt-version of “Habit”, with Glen Hansard for “Falling Slowly”, with John Doe on “Golden State”, with Queens of the Stone Age on “Little Sister”, and The Strokes on “Juicebox”. Glen Hansard, Liam Finn, and Joseph Arthur joined Pearl Jam for “All Night”. “Red Mosquito” featured The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas. Liam Finn joins Ed for “Habit” (note: Liam once said on Pearl Jam Radio that it was his favorite song), and TheNewNo2′s Dhani Harrison plays guitar on his request “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town”. John Doe also joined Pearl Jam for “The New World”. The first encore saw Ed debut a new song on guitar with the band watching and smiling side-stage. Ed remarked the chorus came from an earlier discussion he had with John Doe, “Never thought we would, never thought we could / So glad we made it / I’m so glad we made it / I’m so glad we made it to when it all got good.” Glen Hansard sang with the band on “Smile”. Ed reflects saying that Pearl Jam “have had different leaders at different times” and a funny exchange ensues between Ed and Stone on the next song. “No Way” and “Public Image” are next on the setlist, but Stone wants to skip “No Way”, while Ed wants to do both. Of course, the crowd cheers for both and both are played. “Spin the Black Circle” is dedicated to all independent record stores, and Mike imitates a record by running many laps around his amps, behind Matt, out Stone’s side and behind Ed. Temple of the Dog performs again, this time with “Hunger Strike”, “Reach Down” (backup singers: Glen Hansard, Joseph Arthur, David Garza, Liam Finn, Eddie Vedder) and bust-outs “Call Me a Dog” and “All Night Thing”. “Rockin’ in the Free World” features all the artists singing backup on two mics (L-R) and is a tremendous, joyous collaboration. “Yellow Ledbetter” is the classic goodbye song, and finishes with Mike performing the Star-Spangled Banner. All smiles as the band takes a bow and closes the two-day festival.

TFT Notes: Pearl Jam kick off their month-long tour of South and Central America. The venue is not sold out – this show was added after the initial Nov 4 show sold out – but the crowd is still very large. The PJ20 backdrops, new logos, and lighting adorn the huge stage, complemented with video screens on each side. During “Release”, Ed sings “Oh, Dear John, can you see this now”. After five straight rockers following “Release”, Ed checks in with the crowd in Portuguese “Hey folks! We are happy we are in Sao Paulo. Thanks for inviting us back. One question, Is everybody OK out there?” before “Even Flow”. The Ramones were very popular in Brazil, and the placement of “I Believe in Miracles” (last played May 20, 2010) is nice, with Matt Cameron providing harmonies on the chorus. The last time Pearl Jam played Brazil was 2005, so fans get to hear songs from S/T and Backspacer for the first time live. Ed thanks X for playing with Pearl Jam. For X, this is their first time playing in Brazil, but talks about The Ramones playing in Brazil and how “Come Back” was written for Johnny Ramone who died in 2004. The second encore starts with a rocker (“Comatose”) and continues with three crowd favorites “Black”, “Better Man” and “Rearviewmirror”, before closing with “Rockin’ in the Free World”, where Ed sings “there’s colors on the street/ green, yellow and blue” referring to the Brazilian flag.
