TFT Notes: Pearl Jam begins the third of four legs of the world tour in support of Pearl Jam. There are two premieres at this show: "Education" (Binaural) and "The Boys are Back in Town", a cover by Dublin's Thin Lizzy. Ed greets the crowd and recognizes the time that has passed, "Hello, I think it's been a long time. I know exactly how long it's been, I think it's been six years or so. And a lot can happen in six years. Thanks for giving us this welcome back into this part of the world. Everybody OK out there? A lot can happen in six years: some of you might have graduated, got jobs, gotten out of prison. A lot can happen in 6 years. Probably the most important thing you'd take pride in knowing is that I fell in love with a woman that has Irish blood in her (Cheers) - her last name is 'McCormick'. And it happened to Mike McCready as well ... fell in love with a girl named "O'connor". And to top it off, now I have a little girl with Irish blood in her. So here's to the fire and the blood of the Irish." Later Ed mentions the typically enthusiastic European crowd "I don't want to say anything bad about America, but I just couldn't wait to get over here and hear people singing." Ed prefaces the debut of "Education", "So most of the songs we've ever written, we play most of them. So it's actually kinda rare that we play something for the first time live because we usually play them, or they'be been played before. So this is kinda of a B-side type thing, but we've never played it and maybe we'll find out why. This song is called 'Education'." "Education" contains the lyric change "See the President who can't be pick out his own tie". Ed wonders about "boos" and realizes it's "Booooom", as this is his "first time in Europe, his first time overseas." Ed continues his trend of telling jokes about "The Point" in Dublin, "About 2 years ago in Seattle, I was talking to the singer of an Irish band, and he was saying things about how 'when their bands make records it's like a horse, like breeding a horse. when we breed the horse we don't just want to breed the horse, we want to it to win. We don't want rock-and-roll to become a niche.' And I said 'But what's the point?' and he said, (irish accent) 'Oh Eddie, The Point's a great fuckin place to play in Dublin.'". Ed doesn't preface "The Boys Are Back In Town" and the band just jumps right into it. The crowd erupts after the first big chord and the signature bass riff by Jeff. Almost more than any Pearl Jam song the entire night, most of the Dublin crowd comes right in on the first lyric and helps Eddie out. The modified lyric "But man, I think we're fuckin crazy" (original: "But man, I still think them cats are crazy") gets a huge response. "Fuckin' Up" closes the show, with Ed saluting "we'd like to thank all our friends from Ireland that we see when they come on tour. We'd like to thank you for sticking by us and coming back to see us after all these years."

TFT Notes: This show in Arhem marks the first show in the Netherlands in almost ten years, following the cancellation at the Sportpaleis Ahoy' on July 3, 2000 following the Roskilde tragedy. This venue, the Gelredome, is considerably larger - about 30,000 capacity - than the Sportpaleis Ahoy'. Ed asks the crowd to be nice to each other and to watch out for their neighbors, "because the world outside is ugly as it is". A lot of older songs were played, much to the enthusiasm of the crowd. The tag on "Better Man" was "No Woman, No Cry" which Eddie eventually turned into "when I have no woman, I cry". Man of the hour was played as a special request for "our new friend Peter Hendriks", according to Eddie. During the instrumental jam in "Porch", Eddie took his guitar and reflected a spot light into the crowd moving across the entire stadium. At the start of the second encore everybody was on stage except for Eddie. Eventually, he strutted onto the stage with a wine bottle in hand, his silver jacket on and wearing a George W. Bush mask. The guys started playing "Bu$hleaguer" while Eddie/Bush was dancing. After he took the mask off, he spat on it, headbutted it and put it on his microphone stand. Somewhere during the song he even poured wine down the mouth of it. After the song ended he told the crowd "some of my actions may seem violent, but they're nothing compared to the killing of thousands of innocent people in Iraq." During "Rockin' in the Free World", Eddie jumped off the stage to give a tambourine to someone in the crowd. He proceeded up a narrow space in the mosh pit and sang a verse while he was being held by all the outstretched hands.

Pearl Jam previously had cancellations in 1992 (07/04/92 - Torhout Festival, 07/05/92 - Werchter Festival) and the 07/02/00 Werchter Festival following the Roskilde tragedy. The audience sang the "doo doo-doo"s at the end of "Black" and repeated it for minutes, with the band eventually stopping and Ed signaled to the crowd we gave him goose bumps. TFT Notes: A few hours before the show, heavy rains fell on a beautiful Arena di Verona. It stopped raining for a while (just in time for My Morning Jacket set), but before Pearl Jam took the stage a downpour came back. Ed welcomed the crowd saying "buona sera" ("good evening") and the band started playing "Release". Well-matched "Given To Fly" followed. Before the next song Ed spoke a few words in Italian. "You are truly beautiful when you are wet", he says referring to the colorful raincoats worn by most of the audience. After "Love Boat Captain" Ed made another speech in Italian. He says that a local newspaper wrote that Italy is "a second home for Pearl Jam, and "usually newspapers lie, but this time they told the truth", and the crowd gives him a big round of applause. "Even Flow" includes solos by Mike and Matt - after the song Ed "introduced" both of them to the audience. During "Not For You" the rain finally ceased. The crowd sang the first verse of "Better Man". The band closed the main set with a powerful version "Blood". Ed was about to sing "Paint Ed big..." part, but loud "hey, hey" chant caused him to stop. He looked at the roaring crowd with a stunned look on a face and then continued the song. The whole band except Ed returned to the stage to play "Inside Job" - the frontman appearead after a few first notes of the song to an obvious, additonal applause. "Come Back" was dedicated (in Italian) to Johnny Ramone. "Two years ago on the September 15th, a man died. He was a friend of mine and a legend. His name was Johnny Ramone.", says Vedder, "I spoke with his wife last night. She asked me to thank the Italian Ramones fans." During a long "Porch" jam, Ed used his guitar to reflect the light onto the audience. Before the second encore Ed thanked the crowd (this time in English), and promised the band will return sooner than another six years (previous tour in Europe was in year 2000). Then he tried to count in Italian: "Uno, duo, tre" but that only made Stone laugh, so Ed went back to the usual "One, two, three, four, two three" of "Elderly Woman..." After that song a short version of "My Sharona" by The Knack was played, with Ed changing lyrics to "My Verona". During "Alive" solo Ed went up to side sectors of the amphitheater, did a nice slide trough a puddle while runnin across the stage. Mike played the begining and the end of "Yellow Ledbetter" sitting on the edge of the stage. (note: this entire show was filmed by a professional crew.)
